Note: Nintendo has confirmed that the they have no plans to release the "Virtual Console" on the Nintendo Switch. Note that those who do not wish to use the online service can still use the eShop, manage friends, share screenshots via social media, and use the Parental Controls.

Nintendo detailed that most games will require a subscription to the service to play online - but there may be exceptions and, of course, free promotions. The online service is only for Nintendo Switch and does not affect Wii U or 3DS online features. It lets players Invite friends to play online, set play appointments, and chat with friends, while enjoying online matches in compatible games, all from a smart device. Instead, the Nintendo Switch Online Service uses a dedicated smart device app to connect to the Nintendo Switch Console. There is no native voice chat for Nintendo Switch, however. Subscribers will also be able to backup save files for most games to a cloud service that can be transferred to multiple consoles. It will also be possible to play these games offline. Every classic NES game will support voice chat via the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app. Friends can even watch each other play single-player games online, and then pass the controller at any time. One new feature is an online version of couch-style consecutive play.
With most games, players can engage in online competitive or co-op multiplayer, or take turns controlling the action. Instead of mirroring Nintendo's original Virtual Console setup on the Wii, the NES games on Switch will take advantage of the online service. Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Super Mario Bros. The service provides access to 20 classic NES games at launch, including Soccer, Tennis, Donkey Kong, Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber, Dr. Similar to other online services, Nintendo Online offers access to game downloads to subscribers - but the offering differs in that it focuses on classic titles from Nintendo's past. The Nintendo Switch Online Service includes special offers and discounts and enables players to play compatible co-op and competitive games online with a Nintendo Account.
